The DTZ exam (German test for immigrants) is aimed at all participants who wish to prove their German language skills. In addition, all BAMF integration courses end with the DTZ exam, the cost are paid by the BAMF. Furthermore, the DTZ exam is a scaled exam, which means that general knowledge is tested on two competence levels (A2 and B1). Depending on the language level, participants receive either an A2 or B1 certificate. However, this exam can also be taken by any other person in Germany who is interested.
What is the DTZ exam worth?
With the Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer (German test for immigrants), the participants either prove their language skills for naturalisation in Germany or for an extension of the residence permit. In addition, the telc certificate can also be helpful, for example, when looking for an internship or a job. The DTZ certificate certifies the basic knowledge of the German language and helps you to find a job. This certificate is also valid for a lifetime.
On level A2 you can communicate in a simple way in everyday situations. You can also have short conversations in familiar situations and use simple grammatical structures correctly.
On level B1 you can communicate in a simple and coherent way in everyday life. You will also be able to report on experiences, describe goals and give reasons for your own opinion. In general, you can use the most important structures correctly. You know the vocabulary of the most common everyday topics such as offices, work, shopping, health, children, media and housing.
The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 1 hour and 40 minutes. There is no break during the exam. The oral exam can take place on the day of the written exam or on another day. As a rule, however, it takes place on the same day. For the oral exam there is no preparation time and usually the exam is always held with two participants. However, if there is an odd number of candidates, a participant must take the exam with one of the examiners. You must also present an official document (identity card or passport) for the exam.
Can I repeat the exam?
Yes, you can repeat the exam as often as you like. However, you must repeat the complete exam both orally and in writing.
